![]() ![]() With most historical romance novels, one can usually tell how the book will end. And the depths of emotions of the main characters are such that I don't think you'll miss them. I like steamy scenes, but they are not a deal breaker for me. I think the author prefers that the characters have their privacy. If you happen to be looking for the hot and heavy steamy scenes, you won't find them here. She even tried to overcome these weaknesses. She actually had a moral compass as well as some faults. This heroine's interests were not about women's rights and she did not balk at the conventions of the day in every chapter. The heroine had a good intuition (didn't do stupid things most of us would never do). Also, potential romances abound (the most important part!) and they have their own twists and turns. The whole story isn't spent trying to solve one mystery. ![]() ![]() I suppose this book could be called a mystery but it's different in that as soon as the twist and turns and questions come up, they are answered fairly soon. It's really difficult for me to go into the plot without giving anything away, so I won't. It reminds me a bit of Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale in its drama and seriousness but it was not quite as deep or emotional. ![]() While I enjoyed my first listen, the Pembroke Park one, it came no where near the caliber of Lady Maybe. There are mushrooms that so resemble birds they’re routinely shot by hoodwinked hunters, ghostly tooth-like mushrooms that drip “blood,” mushrooms that glow in the dark-all of which, along with well over a hundred others, can be found in Toronto-based artist Diane Borsato’s new mycological masterpiece. It seems everyone is embracing their inner mycophile these days, and though I retain a contrarian teenager’s aversion to trends, I’m totally on board with the mushroom craze. Thus, reading becomes a factor of social and affective communion with her people and also represents a process of discovery and acquisition of insight into human nature. The next section explores the potential of reading for the Queen and the ways in which reading contributes to change in matters of both private and professional life. The first part also draws the connection between the media craze which exposes the private side of the royalty and Bennett’s disclosure of the humanity of Queen Elizabeth II through the mediation of the world of literature instead of that of tabloids or television. The introduction presents the background to Bennett’s novella, with special emphasis on the monarchist and anti-monarchist trends in Britain, as well as on the increased popularity of the monarchy as a result of intensive media coverage. This article looks at Alan Bennett’s fictional exercise in The Uncommon Reader (2006/2008), which provides the British monarchy with a human face and analyses the effects of this process of humanization through reading. ![]() Mihaela Culea, Vasile Alecsandri University of Bacau, Romania ![]() Indexing and Abstracting and Preservation of Digital Contents. ![]() ![]() ![]() Suk's next book, The Space Between Here and Now, will be published in fall 2023.
